In case you are not aware of it, there is an on-going attempt to expand the LWV Social Policy subgroup on this Forum to cover a broad range of criminal justice issues.  Please ask your League's criminal justice director to take a look at the Social Policy Forum and participate in it.

Though it received little publicity afterward, at the LWVUS convention in May, 2012, the following national Sentencing Policy was adopted by concurrence:  "Oppose mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenses. In general, alternatives to imprisonment should be explored and utilized, taking into consideration the circumstances and nature of the crime."

There are new national efforts in Congress to change sentencing and prison policies, and your state League (as well as the LWVUS) needs to be aware of these opportunities and support or opppose them as appropriate.  Your own state government may also be considing new sentencing policies, and now your League has an official basis to lobby for reform.  Thank you for passing on this message to the right people in your League.
