On Saturday, March 9, 2013, the League of Women Voters of Maine partnered with Maine Public Broadcasting Network to show a film entitled "Park Avenue", produced by Independent Lens and shown on MPBN (and other Public Broadcasting Stations across the country) last November.

Shown at the University of Southern Maine's Glickman Library in Portland, and simultaneously at the Bangor Public Library in Bangor, League and community members gathered for a presentation and discussion of the film which documents the economic disparity in New York City between the billionaires who live on Park Avenue in Manhattan and those who live at the other end of Park Avenue in the South Bronx.

An audience of 55 in Portland at 25 in Bangor produced lively discussion and an opportunity to showcase the League of Women Voters. MPBN provided the DVD and publicity on their website, on air, on their community bulletin board and an email reminder to 30,000 subscribers!

The League arranged for the venue, did its own publicity, and led the discussion. It was so successful that the LWV of Maine is considering other opportunities to collaborate again.

Through the MLD program, the League is becoming more effective and more powerful in communities throughout the nation. The MLD program is funded by the Fund for Local League Growth.

Give to the fund and help grow the League in your community. For more information about the MLD program and how to participate, please contact Shauneen Grout at SGrout@lwv.org.
